Who is legally allowed to treat you

The rule is simple: the clinician must be licensed in the state where you are sitting during the visit. A physician in Boston or Austin can see you online only if they hold a Maine license. Maine also splits physician oversight between two boards, which trips people up: the Board of Licensure in Medicine handles MDs, while the Board of Osteopathic Licensure handles DOs. Nurse practitioners are licensed by the Maine State Board of Nursing and can practise independently after finishing a supervised transition period, so your prescriber may well be an NP.

Maine takes part in multistate licensure compacts for physicians, nurses and psychologists, which shortens the paperwork for clinicians adding states. Compacts speed licensure; they do not remove the license requirement. Participation and rules change, so confirm a named clinician's status with the relevant Maine board rather than trusting a website badge.

MaineCare, private plans and prior authorization

Maine has one detail worth knowing before you argue with a plan: prior authorization (your insurer's pre-approval step) is required for a telehealth service only when it would be required for the same service in person, according to the Center for Connected Health Policy's Maine summary. That does not mean a medication is covered. GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are the clearest example, where denials are common even when telehealth itself is a covered benefit.

Compounded medication and the pharmacy behind it

If a program offers a compounded drug (custom-prepared by a licensed pharmacy rather than an FDA-approved finished product), ask which pharmacy fills it. Out-of-state pharmacies mailing into Maine need a nonresident license from the Maine Board of Pharmacy, and that record is public.
