Licensing: who is allowed to treat you here

What matters is where you are sitting during the visit, not where the company has its office. A physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant treating a patient in Detroit, Marquette or anywhere in between generally needs a Michigan license issued through the boards at the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). You can check any clinician's license on LARA's public verification search before your first appointment.

Michigan also participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which gives physicians a faster route to licenses in member states. Continued membership has been publicly debated by health systems and lawmakers, so treat it as a detail that can move. The compact speeds up licensure; it does not remove the need for one. That is also the plain answer to the cross-state question: care across state lines is a licensing matter, and the state board enforces it.

What telehealth in Michigan can prescribe, and where limits bite

Most routine prescriptions can follow a virtual visit once a clinician has evaluated you. Controlled substances are the exception worth asking about. ADHD stimulants and some sleep and anxiety medicines sit under federal tele-prescribing rules that have been extended in stages and are still unsettled, alongside Michigan's own prescriber requirements. Ask a program directly which category your medication falls into before you pay a first month.

Weight-loss programs raise a second question. Many national services dispense compounded medication (custom-prepared by a licensed pharmacy) rather than the brand product. A pharmacy shipping into Michigan is expected to hold Michigan licensure, so ask which pharmacy fills the order and whether the drug is compounded or FDA-approved brand. Paying for it: Medicaid, private plans and cash pay

Michigan Medicaid covers many telehealth services under MDHHS policy, but the covered service list and any behavioral health rules change through policy bulletins, so confirm with MDHHS or your Medicaid health plan. Medicare telehealth flexibilities have run on short congressional extensions and have lapsed at points, so check the current position with CMS or your plan rather than assuming last year's rules hold. Michigan's insurance code also limits plans from excluding a service purely because it was delivered by telemedicine, summarised in the Center for Connected Health Policy's Michigan tracker. That is not the same as your plan covering a GLP-1.
